En ny Nutria standard indenfor pelsbranchen ’Argentinian Wild Nutria Certification’ er udviklet af Baltic Academy i samarbejde med standardejer International Fur Federation (IFF). Nutria (Myocastor coypus) er en vandlevende gnaver, hvis høst af pelsen har en lang og rig historie i Argentina.

Baltic Academy har været udvikler og projektleder på opgaven fra brainstormingsfasen og til den færdige standard-beskrivelse lå klar til udgivelse ultimo december 2022. Opgaven fra IFF lød:

”Den nye ‘Argentinian Wild Nutria Certification’ skal være en standard for virksomheder, der handler med vild nutria pels høstet i den argentinske natur. Standarden skal sikre, at handlen med argentinsk vild nutria pels imødekommer kravene i IFF’s Furmark system. Udviklingen af standarden skal baseres på rådgivning fra en uafhængig teknisk rådgivnings-kommitte, som består af eksperter i vedligehold af nutriabestanden, der lever naturligt i Argentina. ”

Under projektet har Baltic Academy blandt andet bidraget med at:

• Skrive standarden med tilhørende tjekliste til auditering
• Lede projektets gang, heriblandt at være tovholder på de mange eksperter indenfor området og andre interessenter
• Lave forsøg og afprøvninger af standarden ude hos jægerne/indsamlerne i Argentina

Den nye nutria standard indeholder helt centrale fokuspunkter og beskrivelser af krav indenfor fokusområderne dyrevelfærd, bæredygtighed og sporbarhed, i forbindelse med jagten på og handel med vild nutria fra Argentina. Ud over at sikre konformitet med regler og regulativer indenfor området, så stiller standarden yderligere krav på fokusområderne efter standardejers ønske.

A new Nutria standard within the fur industry “Argentinian Wild Nutria Certification” has been developed by Baltic Academy, in collaboration with the protocol’s owner International Fur Federation (IFF). Nutria (Myocastor coypus) are water-dwelling rodents, the harvest of which has a long and rich history in Argentina.

Baltic Academy has acted as project manager on this task and thus has been an active part from brain storming till the deliverance of the finalized protocol in December 2022. The request from IFF was:

"The new ‘Argentinian Wild Nutria Certification’ shall be a protocol for companies trading in Wild Nutria from Argentina. It will be created to ensure that trade in Argentinian wild nutria meets the required standards of the Furmark® system. The protocol will be created with the advice of an independent technical advisory committee consisting of experts in the management of wild nutria in Argentina"

During this project, Baltic Academy has contributed by:

• Writing the protocol and subsequent check list
• Acting as project manager including being responsible for the many experts in the field and other stakeholders
• Testing the protocol in the field with hunters/trappers in Argentina.

The new Nutria protocol contains animal welfare, sustainability and traceability requirements associated with the harvest and trade of wild nutria in Argentina. Besides ensuring conformance with rules and regulations within the area, this protocol sets out additional requirements to further improve animal welfare, sustainability and traceability, per request by the protocol’s owner.
